My First Competition Win!

Saturday, November 25, 2017

Yes, MY FIRST WIN. I started joining singing competitions when I was 13, and later songwriting competitions after I discovered that I could also write songs. This year, I'm 23 and I am a champion for the first time.

It feels so surreal! It's amazing how much I've changed over the past 10 years. If you asked the 13-year-old me if I knew I was going to grow up becoming a freelance singer, a songwriter and a part of the music industry, it would have been an eye-roll and a big "no". Now 10 years later, having just graduated from university, I am happily singing for a living, and will soon embark on a career in songwriting.

I just sold my first song (stay tuned), and that will be my first and last song sold as an independent songwriter because... I am now signed to Touch Music Publishing! I am still independent as an artiste, the only difference is that I will now write and sell songs for clients via Touch Music Publishing. And I got this opportunity because of my previous songwriting competition, 心情溶剂 XQRJ 2017 in which I was a grand finalist. I am REALLY REALLY thankful for the all the opportunities! I wonder who I saved in my previous life...

-- I WRITE AND SING MY SONG 2017 --

When I came across a One-CSS's Facebook post publicising their latest songwriting competition, I Write and Sing My Song 2017, I knew I had to join. I have no idea why but I always get the adrenaline rush whenever I participate in competitions. The process of competing, the friends made, the sense of uncertainty, the stress (wait what?), the possibility of winning something... The most I got out of joining competitions is 2nd place, but this time I finally got first! It might be my last, because what are the chances of winning... I am truly thankful that the judges and audience like my song!

Here's my song~ The first part of the verse wasn't recorded sorry!

I look like I'm giving a talk HAHA

Although I have been performing on stage for a few years now, I still get the jitters when I perform as a contestant. Its just different... You are under the scrutiny of the judges and the audience, and one small mistake could make you fumble and make more mistakes.

I still remember the first time I stood on stage for a singing competition. It was horrendous. I was singing with an actual song (with the originals vocals haha I didn't know how to find instrumental tracks that time) and the judges couldn't even hear what I was singing!! Of course I didn't get into the next round. But it was precisely this setback that made me determined to come back stronger. The following year, I joined again, and yet I still didn't qualify for the next round T.T

Did I give up? Nope.

I told myself "NEVER MIND, TRY AGAIN NEXT YEAR!!"

And so I did, and I managed to get into the finals!!

From then on I was convinced that nothing is impossible.

As long as you keep working hard and not give up, there will be a day you will make it! I am far from successful, but I know that I have come a long way since 10 years ago, and I am happy and proud of myself for never giving up.

This is Zerlene, my trusted gig partner!!
Thanks for agreeing to be my backup vocalist and guitar accompaniment!

During the announcing of results, they were announcing the 2 consolation prizes, 2nd runner up, 1st runner up... All these while I swear I didn't think I'll get first. Everybody performed well; there were 18 finalists, how on earth will I stand a chance?

And then it came to the announcing of the champion. The host announced my name.

I was like "?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!"

I really couldn't believe my ears.

In my heart I was jumping like crazy but in reality I think I successfully maintained my sanity hahaha

Here's a group photo with all the prize winners~

It has been a few months since I started doing music full time and I am loving it so far. To be honest, I am worried that my degree will soon become irrelevant if I don't quickly get a day job, but I think for now, I still have a bit of time for some trial and error~

For all who are pursuing your dreams, let us all JIAYOU!!!
